Why do I need cards?
Only taking cheque and cash orders currently?
If you only take offline orders at the moment, you could be missing out. We've seen many businesses where this happens. Someone has (for example) rung up and enquired about getting 2 custom tyres for their vehicle only to be told to come in to the garage to make payment and then come back again a few days later when the custom tyres are in. The garage is then hoping the potential customer will take the trouble of coming in. If they paid while on the phone, its a guaranteed sale, or having a simple website with your products, prices and a "buy now" option converts them into a customer there and then
Already got a PDQ machine? If you take card payments over the phone currently for services that you provide, using a "PDQ" machine (a device which allows you to punch card details in and get payment authorised) and you don't physically see the person and see the card being used, then you are carrying out a "Cardholder not present" transaction. The liability for fraudulent use of the card is on you. However if you have an online form so the customer can fill the details in themselves, you can make use of the online equivalent of chip and pin and now any fraudulent transactions are not down to you. If you are suffering chargebacks at the moment, you have to do something about it and there is a solution.
Never do "card holder present" ?
If your current credit/debit card usage means you never do a "cardholder present" transaction - where someone comes into your shop and you put the card into the PDQ machine, then you are paying for a rental you dont need.
You are likely paying £15 - £20 a month to rent the PDQ machine and only ever doing cardholder not present transactions. Secure Trading provide a "virtual" PDQ machine as part of their service, so for £15 per month you can replace one PDQ machine with a virtual PDQ machine on every desk in the office that has an internet connection and a web browser! Give all your backroom office staff the ability to take card payments over the phone, rather than sharing 1 PDQ machine around the office.
Then using the same Secure Trading account that controls your virtual PDQ account, you can add features to your website to allow your customers to buy online. This takes the liability away from your shoulders for fraudulent transactions. Secure Trading can provide the full package of front end website functionality and back end processing, so if you are currently paying Streamline, Worldpay, Lloyds Cardnet etc to put the money in the bank for you, then Secure Trading can do that as well.
What about Paypal?
Paypal is a wonderful service and one of its benefits is that there is no monthly fee so if you only do a couple of transactions a month its well worthwhile but they charge 3.5% (as of writing) of the transaction value so if you sell 10 x £100 items you will pay £35 in transaction fees whereas SecureTrading will set the percentage charge partly based on your overall turnover and partly on the risk of the product/service you provide, but rates are usually under 2% or cheaper, so if it was 1.7%, £17 in transaction fees and £15 in the monthly charge is already cheaper. If you do 20 orders rather than 10, Secure Trading might cost you £49 in total (£1.70 * 20 sales +£15 monthly fee) with Paypal costing £70. Obviously these are only guidelines and you would need a confirmed figure before taking out a Secure Trading deal but for most customers who do more than a few transactions per month, Secure Trading can work out cheaper than Paypal.
You might be thinking
"But some people don't have payment cards and Paypal allow them to link it to their bank account instead.
Aren't I missing out on those orders?"
The answer is a resounding no, because Secure Trading can link to Paypal too! Offer your customers the option of paying by card through Secure Tradings system or by Paypal. Its only one system on your website so you aren't paying for 2 separate integrations and you get the best of both worlds
